About the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program
Are you a UC Irvine or UCI Health co-worker who has a federal student loan(s)? If so, in certain situations, you can have your federal student loans forgiven, canceled, or discharged. That means you won’t have to pay back some or all of your loan(s).
Qualifying for Federal Student Loan Forgiveness
Public Service Loan Forgiveness Opens a new window (PSLF) is the most common way people apply to have their student loans forgiven.
ou may be able to receive Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) if:
- You work in federal, state, local, or tribal government (including the military and AmeriCorps), and
- You have a Direct Loan (Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loans and Federal Perkins Loans may become eligible for PSLF if you consolidate your loans Opens a new window into the Direct Loan Program.)
Details on How the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program Works
The PSLF program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loan after you’ve made the equivalent of 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full time for a qualifying employer.
- The University of California is a qualified employer.
- Anyone with federal student loans may participate directly in the PSLF program.

UC Irvine and UCI Health have partnered with PeopleJoy for the purpose of making participation in the PSLF program easier. PeopleJoy can help you navigate the complex PSLF process.
- The PeopleJoy program is a 1 year pilot, and currently only available to non-represented co-workers.
- If you currently are not eligible for assistance from PeopleJoy, you are encouraged to participate in the PSLF directly.

PeopleJoy will assist with navigating the application process, managing documentation, and serving as your advocate with federal loan servicers. Eligible loans must be in the co-worker’s name.

• Hands-Off Enrollment & Recertification. Avoid the hassle of paperwork and deadlines. PeopleJoy manages your enrollment and ongoing recertifications for federal programs, ensuring you stay compliant and on track year after year.
• One-on-One Goals-Based Coaching. Receive customized repayment advice that aligns with your budget, income goals, and overall financial health. Regular coaching calls ensure you’re supported throughout your repayment journey.
• College Financial Planning. Get help planning for the future—whether for yourself, your children, or other dependents. Services include one-on-one sessions with an advisor, evaluation of the most cost-effective financing strategies, and access to tools that help you make informed decisions.
• Private Loan Coaching & Refinancing Guidance. Explore repayment strategies for your private student loans with personalized coaching. PeopleJoy’s advisors will help you understand your options for refinancing and connect you with vetted refinancing partners, so you can potentially reduce interest rates and monthly payments.
How to Get Started
If you’re a UC Irvine or UCI Health non-represented co-worker with student loan debt – federal or private – you can get started at no cost by visiting [INSERT NAME AND LINK]. You’ll need your work email address, UCINetID, and employee ID number to enroll. Once your profile is complete, PeopleJoy will reach out via email to confirm your enrollment, request any additional information, and guide you through the next steps. Alternatively, you will be notified if you are ineligible for services.
